The Humanities Symposium

The Macquarie-Newcastle Humanities Postgraduate Research Symposium is organised by and for postgraduate researchers in Arts and Humanities at Macquarie University and the University of Newcastle.

Details of the Humanities Symposium for 2009 (pdf) (opens in a new window)

The inaugural symposium was held at Macquarie University in February 2007. The theme of the first symposium was The Power of Perceptions. There was extensive latitude within this theme. Papers chosen for the symposium involved the relativity of truth, political propaganda, manipulation of ideas, changing concepts, the ambiguities and illusions of "reality", the power of imagination and creativity...and much else besides.

The purpose of the annual symposium is to provide postgraduate students with the opportunity to develop a wider audience for their research and to take part in an exchange of ideas and methodologies that will broaden the research culture of both universities. It is also intended to develop an understanding of the Humanities as a cohesive research community.

Abstracts for the 2009 Humanities Symposium are now available (pdf) (opens in a new window)

Papers for the 2009 symposium will be selected through a peer-review process involving postgraduate students at both Macquarie and Newcastle Universities. Papers will be split into two streams and delegates to the symposium will be able to move between streams to hear papers they are interested in. Each paper will be delivered in a 20-minute presentation with 10 minutes for questions and comments.
