New Codes for Research Classification in the Humanities
The Australian Bureau of Statistics has released a new set of Research Classification Codes to replace the RFCD codes. The new codes, known as the Australian and New Zealand Standard Research Codes (ANZSRC), have come into effect and should now be used for all ARC and internal grant applications.
The full set of new ANZSRC codes can be found at the ABS website.
For convenience, Julian Zipparo has prepared a comparative table mapping the old RFCD codes onto the new ANZSRC codes. Click through to the Staff Intranet "Research" page to find this table.
The Socio-Economic Objective (SEO) codes have not been changed. (They can be found on the ABS site).

Information regarding Early Examinations
Coursework Studies Committee of Academic Senate has requested that Divisions remind teaching staff that they should not normally give early examinations. P. 41 (bottom of page) of the Undergraduate Handbook lists three types of unavoidable disruption which may be grounds for early examination - or a supplementary exam.
And - if it is not already in your semester 1 unit study guide - please remind students as follows:
The Exam website states:
You are advised that it is Macquarie University policy not to set early examinations for individuals or groups of students. All students are expected to ensure that they are available until the end of the teaching semester, that is the final day of the official examination period.
New Humanities Learning and Teaching website with unit guide online launched
Please register yourself on www.humanities.mq.edu.au/lt for an easy access to all latest news, policies and information regarding learning and teaching in the division and the university.
The unit guide online, a new feature on the learning and teaching website, is also on trial now. The new standard unit guide consists of eight parts: cover page, general information, academic contents, delivery and resources, assessments, policies and other information, unit schedule and topic planner and attachment(s). Instructions and examples are provided.
Anyone who would like to participate in the usability test of the unit guide online, please contact Xinni Du, online education officer, on 4097 or xinni.du@humn.mq.edu.au.
Training on the unit guide online will be provided in April. All unit convenors will be requested to use it for unit guides for semester 2.
If you have any questions or feedback, please do not hesitate to contact Xinni.
Staff Contact List for Semester 1, 2008 now updated!
You can access the new list by clicking on the Staff Contacts link on the right hand side, or by clicking here.
Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research
Last year Universities Australia, the NHMRC, and the ARC published the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research. All Australian universities must be compliant with this Code, not least to receive NHMRC/ARC funding. Some time in 2008 the Vice-Chancellor will be asked to certify that Macquarie is compliant with the Code.
A copy of the Code is on Macquarie's website: http://www.research.mq.edu.au/policy/policies/code.
All research staff are requested to access this document and familiarise themselves with, and to ensure that they consult it as necessary as a guide to responsible conduct in their research. Heads of Departments are also requested to draw the attention of their staff to this code.

Humanities Committees for Semester 1 2008 Updated
The Division of Humanities' Committees website has been updated for 2008 Semester 1. You can also view the updated Committees via this PDF.
Dean's Welcome Letter for 2008
Welcome to the New Year in Humanities at Macquarie. As I said at the end of year party, we all worked extraordinarily hard over 2007, and 2008 will be at least as demanding.
Let me just rehearse our achievements. First Learning and Teaching. With the money from the LTPF Marnie Hughes Warrington has established a program of mentoring and peer assessment across the Division, Xinni Du has been appointed to support e-learning and has developed an online learning template. The Division is home to one discipline based Carrick award examining historical thinking, led by Marnie and Jill Roe; I am on the steering committee of another examining the BA across Australia. Marnie leads an important university funded project on student engagement; and with Marcelle Freiman, Michelle Arrow and Antonina Harbus, we have had an unprecedented 3 successful university teaching awards. At another level, our examination process was smooth and thorough, for which I thank Michael Roberts and Rosemary Colmer, as well as all the staff. We have had fewer appeals than ever, evidence of a good teaching process. And enrolments have increased at a slow but steady rate in Commonwealth funded places and much faster in OUA and non award.
Click here to read the rest of the letter.
Macquarie Teaching Awards
Congratulations to Dr Marcelle Freiman, Dr Antonina Harbus and Dr Michelle Arrow, whose contributions to learning and teaching have been recognised in three Macquarie University Teaching Awards. Marcelle Freiman was awarded one of three Vice Chancellor’s Awards for Teaching Excellence. This award recognises the outstanding fashion in which Marcelle’s teaching in creative writing has positively enhanced students’ learning outcomes and experiences. Antonina Harbus and Michelle Arrow were two of five winners of Vice Chancellor’s Citations for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning. Antonina Harbus’s award was for enhancing the equity of student learning outcomes through the development of resources for students and tutors in ENGL120: Approaches to English Literature. Michelle Arrow’s award recognises her innovative and enthusiastic approach to teaching in the Modern History Honours program, which that fosters student engagement and creativity by exploring history ‘beyond the book’. The Division was also successful in its application for a Teaching Development Grant. The grant will be used to investigate and enhance student engagement. This is the best outcome the Division has had in the University Awards and Grants scheme to date.
Humanities ARC Applicant Reader Service
We are offering again this year a reader service to humanities ARC applicants, thanks to the generous volunteers who have offered their time. Applicants who wish to take advantage of this can have their drafts read and commented on by up to 2 of our readers.
To take part, please email julian.zipparo@humn.mq.edu.au indicating that you would like to be allocated a reader, he will then discuss with you the most suitable people for it, and attempt to distribute the applications to readers as evenly as possible.
Given the research office rolling deadlines, we will set Feb 8th as the date for submission of draft applications for the reader service, and in an effort to minimise any inconvenience to the readers, ask that a single final draft be submitted. Of course, earlier submission will allow more time for the readers and for the incorporation of feedback, so is strongly encouraged.

Congratulations
Dr Linda Evans and her sponsor Prof Naguib Kanawati have successfully obtained one of only six MURFs to commence in 2008. Dr Evans' unique interdisciplinary project linking Egyptology and Animal Behaviour explores 'The Ancient Egyptians’ Atypical Relationship with Invertebrates'.
"Unlike other cultures, the ancient Egyptians not only tolerated, but revered invertebrates. Egyptian cultural remains abound in images of bees, butterflies, grasshoppers, beetles, flies, and scorpions - creatures that usually engender fear or disgust. This evidence suggests a radically different response to the natural world, yet it has been largely neglected by Egyptologists. I propose to explore the Egyptians' atypical relationship with invertebrates through an examination of two- and three-dimensional artworks. The results obtained will provide a more comprehensive account of ancient Egyptian society and beliefs, and present a positive model by which to improve modern perceptions of these animals."
Congratulations also to Dr Tanya Evans and her sponsor Associate Prof Mary Spongberg. Tanya is placed on the reserve list for her project 'Childbirth and Motherhood in Early Colonial Australia'.
